Hi! I am Soud Al Kharusi.
Welcome to my pixel of the internet. Currently, I am a physicist at Stanford University in California. But, like you, I am more than a one-dimensional personality.
On this website I write about my science, comment on society, reflect on various moments in my life, and keep a running log of the many projects that I’ve worked on.
My story
My story begins with my name, Soud (pronounced like “dude” in English). I’m named after my grandfather, the first dentist in Oman! We are a part of the Kharusi tribe.
My father was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar, while my mother hails from Portsmouth, England. I was born and raised in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, as the only son among three sisters.
At 18 years old, I started a new chapter in my life by moving to Montreal, Canada, to attend McGill University. Almost a decade later, I completed my PhD in particle astrophysics and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I now live.
My mission
My mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of the human endeavour for all peoples. I aim to do this by fostering an appreciation for the natural world and by promoting empathy for each other, while exploring the nuances in our values and perspectives.
This pursuit unfolds against a backdrop of stories and is clarified through the lens of some empirical data. This website contains a public record of my attempts; I share experiences and insights from my research, and introduce the tools and platforms I work on to capture and quantify collective sentiment: > read(the_room). Within these pages, you’ll find a tapestry of ideas — some I hope are brilliant, but I am certain many are flawed.
